Copynotes: (Note that, as both copies share a single catalog entry and shelfmark, the referent of the copy notes is somewhat ambiguous). Each vol. of one of library’s sets bears inscription: William Deane Ryland from his father Herman W. Ryland. Each vol. of one of library’s sets with armorial bookplate of Henry Anthony Littledale; in pencil on 2nd front flyleaf, v. 1: Sold at the Marquis of Townsend sale; from the estate of Dr. Joseph G. Stratford. One set (from Stratford) contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt spines with red and black leather labels, comb-marbled endpapers, sprinkled red edges (cracked joints, rubbed); without errata leaf; laid in at front of v. 1: newspaper clipping from the Times literary supplement of a review of Carpenter’s "Reference guide to Edmund Spenser" in which this edition is mentioned; ms. annotation on leaf pasted in on 2nd front flyleaf, v. 1; laid in v. 3, p. 69: paper cut-out depicting 3 figures, one hanging.
Editionnotes: Sig. Eee is present in duplicate in vol.I. The ’life’ is by T. Birch. The ’Proposals for printing by subscription, The faerie queene’ were issued on 1 July 1751.
